Today's storytime was brought to you by the letter "J." So on the board when the kids walked in was:
Read Aloud Books
Pirates in PajamasWritten by Caroline Crowe, illustrated by Tim Knight
Pirates don't need a sword--just some fun pajamas. Climb aboard this book for a fun pajama party! Recently published and with a fun rhyming scheme, this seemed perfect for storytime. The kids were only somewhat impressed, however.
SnoozefestWritten by Samantha Berger, illustrated by Kristyna Litten
Snuggleford Cuddlebun loves the Snoozefest that comes to Snoozeville every year. What better way to celebrate all things sleepy? So this book has been a favorite of mine for a while (it's just SO CUDDLY) but it is a little longer than I thought, reading it aloud. It dragged a bit, but I think the kids still liked it.
Lady Pancake & Sir French ToastWritten by Josh Funk, illustrated by Brendan Kearney
Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast are great friends--until they find out there's only one drop of syrup left. Next thing you know, they're in a messy race against each other to get that last drop first! So it's a bit of a stretch for the theme, but I figure most people eat breakfast in their pajamas and fruit jam makes an appearance. Plus, the ending is just too priceless--it got plenty of laughs! The best book of the bunch.
...although all the books had a rhyming scheme, which for me, turned out to be a little tiring. I prefer variation!
Songs & Rhymes
ACTION RHYME: Teddy Bear
(I adjusted the actions to have more "j" words)
Teddy bear teddy bear, turn around
Teddy bear teddy bear, jump up and down
Teddy bear teddy bear, stretch in place
Teddy bear teddy bear, jogging pace
Teddy bear teddy bear, do some wiggles
Teddy bear teddy bear, do some jiggles
Teddy bear teddy bear, pat your head
Teddy bear teddy bear, ready for bed
Teddy bear teddy bear, jammies are on
Teddy bear teddy bear, give a big yawn
Teddy bear teddy bear, sit on the floor
Teddy bear teddy bear, sleep and snore
SONG: 5 In The Bed
There were 5 in the bed and the little one said, (hold up five fingers)
"Roll Over! Roll Over!" (roll arms)
So they all rolled over and one fell out! (tip over as if falling)
(4, 3, 2…)
There was 1 in the bed and the little one said,
“GOOD NIGHT!”
BELLS SONG: Dancing Jingle Bells
(Tune: We’re Going to Kentucky)
Jingle bells up, and jingle bells down
Jingle to the side, and dance them all around
Dance them on your elbows, dance them on your knees
Jingle really slooow, then jingle with some speed
Dance them on your shoulders, dance them on your head
Dance them on your tummy, and put them all to bed
SONG: Jammy-Time Jam
(After the bells song, we jammed/danced with our bells to this song!)
Games & Activities
Flannel: 5 Little Monkeys
My coworker made this adorable flannel for the 5 Little Monkeys rhyme. I also had the kids stand up and jump and do all the actions as I did the flannel. Lots of fun!
Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Momma called the doctor and the doctor said,
"No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"
(...4, 3, 2, 1)
Craft: Design Your Own Jammies!
A pretty basic craft idea, although I did add a bit of "glam" by having some plastic jewels the kids could use!
