Tools Storytime

This storytime was for babies and their caregivers at my library.

Opening Songs & Rhymes

Well Hello Everybody, Can You Touch Your Nose?
(from Jbrary)

Action Song: We'll Hit the Floor Together
We'll hit the floor together
Hit the floor together,
Hit the floor together,
Because it's fun to do.

We'll smack our knees...
We'll wiggle our fingers...
We'll wave our arms...
...etc.

Fingerplay: Open, Shut Them

Open, shut them, open, shut them
Give them both a clap, clap, clap
Open, shut them, open, shut them
Put them in your lap, lap, lap

Creep them, creep them, slowly creep them
Right up to your chiny, chin, chin
Circle around your little mouth but...
Do not let them in!

Themed Songs & Rhymes

Action Song: Construction Worker Song
(adapted from Storytime Katie)
This is the way we saw the wood,
Saw the wood, saw the wood,
This is the way we saw the wood
So early in the morning

...we pound our nails
...stir the paint
...paint the walls

Lap Bounce: Little Red Wagon
(we use the version on the album Wiggleworms Love You)
Bouncing up and down in my little red wagon (3x)
Won’t you be my darlin’
Down the hill and around the corner, weeee! (3x)
Won’t you be my darlin’
The wheel fell off & the wagon tipped over, woah! (3x)
Won’t you be my darlin’
I’m gonna fix it with my little hammer (3x)
Won’t you be my darlin’
Bouncing up and down in my little red wagon (3x)
Won’t you be my darlin’

Flannel Rhyme: Tool Time Song
(Tune: "The Wheels on the Bus")
The hammer in the shop goes bang, bang, bang
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang bang
The hammer in the shop goes bang, bang, bang
All through the shop

The drill in the shop goes brrr, brrr, brrr... (blow raspberries)
The saw in the shop goes buzz, buzz, buzz...
The sock-et wrench goes click, click, click...
The paint brush in the shop goes swish, swish, swish...
The measuring tape goes snap, snap, snap...

Read Aloud Book

Tap, Tap, Bang, Bang
Written and illustrated by Emma Garcia

The shed is full of tools—so let's build something! All the different tools make different sounds as they do their different jobs. This was a great read for baby time because it was short, but had fun sounds. The illustrations are nice and vivid, too.
Then we end with some instrument-playing and playtime:

Egg-Shaker Songs

  Shake My Sillies Out
 (from Raffi)
Gotta shake, shake, shake my sillies out
Shake, shake, shake my sillies out
Shake, shake, shake my sillies out
And wiggle my waggles away.

Gotta clap, clap, clap my crazies out…
Gotta jump, jump, jump my jiggles out…
Gotta yawn, yawn, yawn my sleepies out…
Gotta stretch, stretch, stretch my stretches out…
Gotta shake, shake, shake my sillies out…

We Shake Our Eggs Together
(adapted from Jbrary)
We shake our eggs together,
We shake our eggs together,
We shake our eggs together,
Because it's fun to do.

We shake them up high!
We shake them down low...
We shake them in the middle.

Drum Sequence

After some marching around the room and songs with drums (e.g. The Grand Old Duke of York), and if the group is not too big, we like to go around the room and let the babies tap out the syllables in their name on a drum (with caregiver's help). This is a great exercise in phonetic awareness. Give it a try!
