Superhero Storytime!

This storytime was for a preschool-aged group at my library.

Today's storytime was brought to you by the letter "S." So on the board when the kids walked in was:

Read Aloud Books

Superhero ABCWritten and illustrated by Bob McLeod

From Astro-Man to the Zinger, learn your ABCs with a cast of silly superheroes! This one worked perfect for me since we've been talking about the alphabet all semester AND it was filled with hilarious superheroes. The kids loved it! The enjoyed pointing out their favorites.

The Day I Lost My SuperpowersWritten by Michaƫl Escoffier, illustrated by Kris Di Giacomo

She can fly and make things disappear, go invisible and walk on the ceiling! But what if that all goes away and she hurts herself? Can super mom make it better? This is a cute book, but it didn't quite work in the group setting (a lot of the humor depends on the illustrations). Probably better for one-on-one.

My Dad, My HeroWritten and illustrated by Ethan Long

While he can't leap tall buildings, fly, or lift trains, Dad sure is awesome. Super cute book that the kids enjoyed. It'd be a good Father's Day book, as well.

Songs & Rhymes

Song: Superheroes
(Tune: Wheels on the Bus)
The Superheroes arms can flex and lift,
Flex and lift, flex and lift,
The superheroes arms flex and lift,
All around the town.

…Eyes go zap, zap, zap
…Legs run very fast
…Legs jump super high
…Flies like zoom zoom zoom!
(I let the kids tell me some other actions
superheroes do and it got really fun!
)

Action Rhyme: Superman, Superman!
Superman, Superman, put on your suit
Superman, Superman, put on your boots
Superman, Superman, jump up high
Superman, Superman, fly fly fly!
Superman, Superman, turn around
Superman, Superman, touch the ground
Superman, Superman, show how strong (flex)
Superman, Superman, the villain is wrong (shake finger)
Superman, Superman, clap and shout hooray!
Superman, Superman, you’ve saved the day!
Superman, Superman, done for now
Superman, Superman, take a bow

Games & Activities

Flannel: Silly Superhero

Last minute decision to make this one (which is why it's just on paper). But anyway, I got this idea from Miss Sarah's Storytime, and it was a total hit! Thanks for the idea!

Flannel: Five Little Superheroes

My co-worker made these, aren't they adorable?

Five superheroes ready to fly
Here comes the villain, "Stop that guy!"
This superhero can save the day.
Off he flies – up, up, and away!

Craft: Superhero Masks

We used the templates from Mild-Mannered Librarian, and the kids loved them. They went flying around the room, ready to save the day! They took really cute photos with some of the props we had, too, like our 1 ton dumbbell weight!
