Today's storytime is brought to you by the letter 'O'. So, on the board when the kids walked in was:
Read Aloud Books
Little Owl LostWritten and illustrated by Chris Haughton
Little Owl has fallen from his nest and can't find his momma! Good thing Squirrel knows just where she is...right? I love this one. It's SO cute. And it garnered such a great response from the kids, who thought it was pretty silly. They enjoyed it for sure.
Little Owl's Orange ScarfWritten and illustrated by Tatyana Feeney
Little Owl's scarf is itchy. It's long. And it's orange. How can he get rid of it? This is pretty cute. I picked it because it helped introduce another 'O' word. The kids liked the giraffe at the end.
Owl BabiesWritten by Martin Waddell, illustrated by Patrick Benson
Momma is gone and the three baby owls are getting worried! Will she come back? So for this book, I actually showed the picture book animated video. Because my voice was gone (Hooray for being sick all weekend! And that's why this is the first post this week!). Either way, it's a pretty cute story.
Songs & Rhymes
Song: Just Like an Owl
(Tune: London Bridges)
Flap your wings and fly around, fly around, fly around.
Flap your wings and fly around, just like an owl.
Open your eyes big and wide, big and wide, big and wide.
Open your eyes big and wide, just like and owl.
Land on the ground and hop along, hop along, hop along.
Land on the ground and hop along, just like an owl.
Turn your head and say who, who, say who, who, say who, who
Turn your head and say who, who, just like an owl.
Song: All Night Long
When the owl’s in the tree he goes
hoot, hoot, hoot!
Hoot, hoot, hoot,
hoot, hoot, hoot!
When the owl’s in the tree he goes
hoot, hoot, hoot!
All night long.
Song: Open, Shut Them
Open, shut them, open, shut them
Give them both a clap, clap, clap
Open, shut them, open, shut them
Put them in your lap, lap, lap
Creep them, creep them, slowly creep them
Right up to your chinny chin chin
Circle them around your little mouth but…
Do not put them in!
Games & Activities
Felt: Owl in the Tree
Because it is, after all, the kids' favorite game!
Owl, owl, where do you hide?
Are you in the (color) tree? Let's peek inside!
I hid the owl in the branches of one of the trees, and then put the leaves on top. So with each guess, I'd peel off just the leaves (like a huge windstorm....right?).
Felt: Good-Night, Owl!
Craft: O is for Owl
I printed off a large letter 'O' and pre-cut feet, a beak, and some eyes. Then the kids glued away with the feathers! They could decorate with markers, too.
