Dogs & Puppies Storytime

This storytime was for a preschool-aged group at my library.

Today's storytime is brought to you by the letter 'D'. So, on the board when the kids walked in was:

Read Aloud Books

If You Give a Dog a DonutWritten by Laura Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond

Then he'll want apple juice to go with it. And he'll pick apples, and play baseball, and so on and so on. It's a classic book and the kids still love it. The happy dance the dog does in the middle is a great opportunity to show off everybody's happy dance.

This book just ate my dog!Written and illustrated by Richard Byrne

Bella's just minding her own business, walking her dog across the page when he disappears! The book ate him! It's new and it's fantastic. The kids thought it was pretty hilarious, especially when the book burps.

The DoghouseWritten and illustrated by Jan Thomas

Oh no! The ball has bounced into...THE DOGHOUSE! Who will get it out? So this one ended up actually freaking some kids out in the middle (it's scary!) but I think the end was a great laugh for everyone. Reading Thomas' books are always fun.

Flannel: At my mom's pet store

Down around the corner at my mom’s pet store

Along came someone with a nickel to pay

And they bought a dog and took it away.

Credit for this idea: Mel's Desk, I just tweaked it to dogs instead of cats, and printed off a bunch of dog pictures to laminate. The kids had a lot of fun counting my dogs and nickels with me.

I got this idea off of Crystal & Co. (with the printable). The parents helped cut the door, but otherwise, kids had fun decorating their doghouse for their dogs!
